FAQ - Social Security Riders

Before examining different riders, you should first understand your basic disability coverage.

Find out how much you will receive the length of waiting period and the cost. Once you have this information you’ll have a better idea if there are any holes in the policy you need to fill. If you should need extra coverage, you may consider a rider that promises to pay benefits while you are waiting for Social Security disability payments to begin. However, be aware that Social Security disability is a very limited program. There’s a five-month waiting period, and you only qualify if you’re expected to be totally disabled for at least a year. Since most people who collect private disability insurance never qualify for Social Security, purchasing a rider of this type may not be a high priority for you now.
